Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Mastodon Account #
Mastodon is a decentralized social media platform that operates on different servers (also called “instances”). Unlike traditional social networks, Mastodon allows users to join different communities based on their interests.
Step 1: Choose a Mastodon Instance (Server) #
Since Mastodon is decentralized, you must choose an instance to join.
- Go to https://joinmastodon.org/.
- Click “Get Started” to see a list of available instances.
- Use the filters to find an instance based on:
- Topic or interest (e.g., technology, art, gaming).
- Language preference.
- Community rules and moderation policies.
- Click “Create Account” on your chosen instance.
🔹 Tip: You can interact with users from different instances, no matter which one you choose!
Step 2: Create an Account #
Once you’ve selected an instance, you need to sign up.
- Enter your details:
- Username (e.g.,
@yourname@mastodon.social). - Email address.
- Create a strong password.

- Click “Sign Up”.
Step 3: Verify Your Email #
- Check your inbox for a verification email from Mastodon.
- Click the verification link in the email.
- Return to Mastodon and log in.
Step 4: Customize Your Profile #
- Go to your Profile Settings.
- Upload a Profile Picture.
- Add a Display Name and Bio.
- Set your profile visibility (Public, Followers-only, or Private).
- Click “Save Changes”.
Step 5: Follow Users & Explore #
- Use the Search Bar to find people, hashtags, or topics.
- Follow users from your instance or other instances.
- Check the “Federated” and “Local” timelines for posts.
Step 6: Post Your First Toot #
- Click the “Compose” button (usually a feather icon).
- Write your post (called a “Toot”).
- Add images, links, or hashtags if needed.
- Choose your privacy settings:
- Public (visible to everyone).
- Unlisted (visible but not shown in public timelines).
- Followers-only.
- Direct message (only to specific users).
- Click “Toot!” to post.
Step 7: Adjust Your Settings (Optional) #
- Go to Settings > Preferences.
- Adjust:
- Privacy settings (who can follow or message you).
- Notification preferences.
- Content filtering (block unwanted content).
