Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Mastodon Account #

Mastodon is a decentralized social media platform that operates on different servers (also called “instances”). Unlike traditional social networks, Mastodon allows users to join different communities based on their interests.


Step 1: Choose a Mastodon Instance (Server) #

Since Mastodon is decentralized, you must choose an instance to join.

  1. Go to https://joinmastodon.org/.
  2. Click “Get Started” to see a list of available instances.
  3. Use the filters to find an instance based on:
    • Topic or interest (e.g., technology, art, gaming).
    • Language preference.
    • Community rules and moderation policies.
  4. Click “Create Account” on your chosen instance.

🔹 Tip: You can interact with users from different instances, no matter which one you choose!


Step 2: Create an Account #

Once you’ve selected an instance, you need to sign up.

  1. Enter your details:
    • Username (e.g., @yourname@mastodon.social).
    • Email address.
    • Create a strong password.
  2. Agree to the server’s rules and policies.
  3. Click “Sign Up”.

Step 3: Verify Your Email #

  1. Check your inbox for a verification email from Mastodon.
  2. Click the verification link in the email.
  3. Return to Mastodon and log in.

Step 4: Customize Your Profile #

  1. Go to your Profile Settings.
  2. Upload a Profile Picture.
  3. Add a Display Name and Bio.
  4. Set your profile visibility (Public, Followers-only, or Private).
  5. Click “Save Changes”.

Step 5: Follow Users & Explore #

  1. Use the Search Bar to find people, hashtags, or topics.
  2. Follow users from your instance or other instances.
  3. Check the “Federated” and “Local” timelines for posts.

Step 6: Post Your First Toot #

  1. Click the “Compose” button (usually a feather icon).
  2. Write your post (called a “Toot”).
  3. Add images, links, or hashtags if needed.
  4. Choose your privacy settings:
    • Public (visible to everyone).
    • Unlisted (visible but not shown in public timelines).
    • Followers-only.
    • Direct message (only to specific users).
  5. Click “Toot!” to post.

Step 7: Adjust Your Settings (Optional) #

  1. Go to Settings > Preferences.
  2. Adjust:
    • Privacy settings (who can follow or message you).
    • Notification preferences.
    • Content filtering (block unwanted content).
